A telescope is an instrument that aids in the observation of remote objects by collecting electromagnetic radiation (such as visible light). The first known practical telescopes were invented in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 1600s (the 17th century), using glass lenses. They found use in terrestrial applications and astronomy.

Within a few decades, the reflecting telescope was invented, which used mirrors. In the 20th century many new types of telescopes were invented, including radio telescopes in the 1930s and infrared telescopes in the 1960s. The word telescope now refers to a wide range of instruments detecting different regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, and in some cases other types of detectors.

The word "telescope" (from the Greek τῆλε, tele "far" and σκοπεῖν, skopein "to look or see"; τηλεσκόπος, teleskopos "far-seeing") was coined in 1611 by the Greek mathematician Giovanni Demisiani for one of Galileo Galilei's instruments presented at a banquet at the Accademia dei Lincei. In the Starry Messenger Galileo had used the term "perspicillum".

Is it conceivable that we world citizens are not the only living beings of our kind in the cosmos?
Q. On a clear night the naked eye can see about 4,500 stars, so the astronomers say. But in the colossal dimensions of the cosmos our stellar system is only a tiny part of an incomparably larger stellar system, one might say, containing some 20 galaxies within a radius of 1,500,000 light-years. And even this vast number of stars is small in comparison with the many thousands of spiral nebulae disclosed by the electronic telescope.. How many stars in this truly "astronomical" figure have an atmosphere suitable for life? The idea that life can flourish only under terrestrial conditions has been made obsolete by research. It is a mistake to believe that life cannot exist without water and oxygen. Even on our own earth there are forms… [cont.]

HELP. * best answer. EASY** (Space.)?
Q. Large astronomical telescopes are usually used together with digital cameras or other electronic instruments, and astronomers seldom look through such telescopes directly. Suggest reasons for this.
Asked by ME! - Fri Jan 1 23:40:37 2010 - Astronomy & Space - 4 Answers - Comments

A. For one thing, we can record the entire time. For two, we can then expand the images on to large TV screens. For three, we can automatically locate things using auto Imaging software. For four, have you ever sat at a telescope and looked through it for hours? Have you ever used sights on a sniper rifle for extended periods of time? you know why? Fatigue. You eye wears out a lot faster looking directly into one rather than looking at the projected images.
